An index of civil wills for the Forest of Dean area, which were granted probate in Gloucester between 1858 and 1941 is being made available online free of charge.
At the Forest of Dean Family History website, you can already search the wills proved from 1858-1910, with the remaining years to come in the future. The index also includes grants of administration (when the deceased person hadn’t left a will) for the period 1858-1864.
Wills proved in the church courts in Gloucester (covering most of Gloucestershire) from 1541-1858 are indexed in Gloucestershire County Council’s Genealogical Database. Wills proved in Bristol from 1781-1858 are indexed at Bristol City Council’s website. You can also find abstracts of Gloucestershire wills at the GENUKI site.
