The third edition of the National Burial Index of England and Wales produced by the Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) is now available. The new edition contains 18.4 million burials, which is five million more than are on the second edition.
The FFHS says: “This Third Edition is expected to be even more popular than earlier editions. Entries have increased by more than 5 million to over 18.4 million burial records taken from Anglican parish; nonconformist; Quaker and Roman Catholic cemetery burial registers throughout England and Wales. Information includes (if found in the original record):
- Forename(s) and surnames
- Date of burial (from 1538 – present day)
- Age
- Details of place where the event was recorded; pre1832 county
- Recording society, group or individual
“No Monumental Inscriptions or details of death registrations are included.
“Now includes a superb updated version of the NBI Viewer program which has the facility to search on sensible, genealogically relevant name variants. It incorporates those records previously published in earlier editions, many of which have since been checked and corrected. Although many more parishes and date ranges are represented, clearly not all burials are included nor will millions of these records be found on any website!
“System Requirements: You’ll need a PC running Windows 98 / XP / Vista / 7, with at least 2.8Gbytes of free disk space and a CD or DVD drive. The NBI is NOT suitable for Apple Mac users.
“For further information, including details of coverage, and order form please visit the dedicated NBI pages at www.ffhs.org.uk
“NBI3 will be available via the FFHS website, www.GENfair.co.uk, family history societies and commercial outlets, at family history fairs and bookstalls etc:
