Association Oath Rolls from 1696 have just been put online.
British Origins has made the 1696 Association Oath Rolls available online. Oaths of allegiance, used to secure loyalty to the sovereign and to help identify potential opponents, were relatively common in in post-Reformation and revolutionary England. Oath rolls offer a valuable pre-19th century census substitute often containing a substantial proportion of adult male names within the areas they covered.
The Association Oath followed the discovery in 1696 of a plot to assassinate William III. A transcription of the Association Oath Rolls for the City of London Livery Companies is now available on British Origins. This dataset contains the names of over 21,500 members of 77 livery companies.
